*DHO* *Seminar: Tools to Think With: Re-conceiving Humanities Research*
Location: Seminar Room 203, The Moore Institute, NUI, Galway
Time: 16:00-17:30
Speaker: Dr. Susan Schreibman, DHO Director

What we are doing in the first decade of this new century is engaging in a
dialogue with past expectations of humanities scholarship, with
ever-changing technology, with the pressure of the increased costs, a more
collaborative work environment and a real fear of the obsolescence of
scholarly work. This talk will explore these themes focusing on new modes o=
f
research, new types of infrastructures and new models of scholarship and
rewards.
All are welcome.

Wednesday 31 March 2009
*DHO Workshop: e-Publishing for Postgrads*
Location: UCD Humanities Institute of Ireland
Time: 10:00 - 13:00

Postgraduate students seeking employment in the academy often find little
guidance in getting their work published in order to establish a reputation
and even less guidance in using digital tools to disseminate their work
outside of traditional publishers. This workshop will discuss changes takin=
g
place in the system of scholarly communication and give advice for creating
scholarship that transcends traditional models of print publishing.

Wednesday 7 to Friday 9 April 2010
*Digital Scholarship: Editing, Mining and Teaching with E-Resources*Venue:
NUI, Galway
Times: TBA
Speakers: Dr Susan Schreibman, Dr Se=E1n Ryder, Kevin Hawkins

This three-day event at NUI, Galway will explore a range of digital
scholarly practice in creating and using the wealth of resources now
available electronically. During the first two days both beginner and
advanced text encoding workshops will be offered. These workshops will
concentrate on the theories and practicalities of creating electronic
scholarly editions utilising the Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines, the
standard in the field.

On the third day a single strand will be offered entitled 'Using Digital
Resources for Irish Research and Teaching'. This workshop is specifically
designed for those who may not want to create their own resources, but who
wish to take advantage of the wide variety of digital resources now
available to the field. This workshop will introduce participants to a
variety of primary and secondary resources while also exploring a number of
freely available tools to transform and, indeed, deform this data to
discover new patterns, new themes, and new insights. Part of the day will
specifically deal with integrating digital resources and tools into teachin=
g
practice.

Wednesday 28 April 2010
*Symposium on TEI and Scholarly Publishing in conjunction with the TEI
Council *
Location: Royal Irish Academy
Time: 10:00-17:00
The growing trend toward open-access publishing and toward funder mandates
for deposit of preprints in archives such as PubMed Central (PMC) has led t=
o
interest in the interchange of scholarly literature in XML created by
different parties. What role could or should the TEI have in asserting
itself as a standard format for author manuscripts, published manuscripts o=
r
both? Should it be involved in building systems for sharing and commenting
on such manuscripts? Should it create a TEI customization for scholarly
publishing or broker a relationship with a vendor for discounted conversion
of content to TEI/XML?

This Symposium will explore such questions through a series of presentation=
s
outlining the current state in institutional publishing operations from the
point of view of private sector publishers (among which the NLM DTDs are
increasingly adopted), and from international initiatives where
interoperability has been identified as a major concern. The objective is t=
o
identify current difficulties in making publication systems interoperable
and identify priority actions for the TEI.
